Child & Adolescent Therapy
If your child or teenager (age 6+) is struggling with their emotions, mental health, behaviour, self-esteem, family issues, friendships, school issues, and lacking effective coping skills, therapy can help.
Because children learn, grow, and process things best through play, I incorporate play and art-based activities into therapy with young children.
Preteens (9-12) are at a unique age; they often find comfort in having the option to play or engage in art, but many also want to be treated like a teenager and may resist play. Providing choice and flexibility for this age, while normalizing play and finding humour, is particularly important.
Adolescents experience tremendous changes in brain development, as they are developing their identity, forming their own opinions and preferences, dealing with hormonal changes, and often becoming very socially influenced. Due to this, many struggles arise during the teen years. Having a good relationship with a therapist, means youth have someone they can count on who will not judge them but who will help them navigate trying times. Beyond talk therapy, psychoeducation, and skill building, youth can benefit from mindfulness, art therapy techniques, and connection through games.
Sand tray therapy is an expressive and hands on approach, which is a powerful way for people to express and process what they need to without words. This is wonderful for all ages and available at my Langley location.
I seek to develop a positive relationship with all clients, which is the foundation for change. I also incorporate psychoeducation, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Solution Focussed Therapy, Choice Theory, and Adlerian and the Satir Model into my work with children and adolescents.
